Why DIY Pressure Washing Can Ruin Your Home's Siding

Thinking of renting a pressure washer this weekend? Read this first to avoid thousands of dollars in accidental water damage.

It happens every spring: homeowners head to the local hardware store, rent a pressure washer, and spend their entire weekend blasting away at their home's exterior. While it might seem like a cost-effective weekend project, DIY pressure washing is the #1 cause of exterior damage we see in Rochester.

The Danger of High Pressure on Siding

Vinyl siding, aluminum siding, and painted wood were never designed to withstand 3,000+ PSI of water pressure. Here is what typically happens when inexperienced operators point a high-pressure wand at a house:

    • Water Intrusion: Vinyl siding is designed to shed rain falling downward. It is not watertight against water blasting upward or horizontally. High pressure forces water behind the siding, soaking the insulation and drywall underneath, leading to hidden black mold.
    • Blown Window Seals: Hitting a window with high pressure will instantly break the thermal seal between double-pane glass, causing permanent fogginess that requires full window replacement.
    • Stripped UV Protection: Vinyl siding has a protective UV coating. Blasting it with pressure strips this coating off, causing the siding to rapidly oxidize, fade, and become chalky within a year.

    The "Tiger Stripe" Effect

Another common DIY mistake is holding the wand too close to the surface, etching permanent lines into wood decks, concrete, and siding. These "tiger stripes" or "wand marks" are virtually impossible to remove without replacing the material or grinding down the concrete.

    The Professional Solution: Soft Washing

At Precision Pressure Washing, we don't use high pressure on your home. We use a method called Soft Washing. By applying specialized, eco-friendly detergents at low pressure (similar to a garden hose), we melt away dirt, kill mold at its root, and gently rinse the home clean. It's 100% safe, lasts longer than pressure washing, and protects your biggest investment.
